Celebrating the Maya Forest as a Garden
_____UCSBs MesoAmerican Research Center partnered with the local non-profit Exploring Solutions Past to bring to Santa Barbara two Maya Forest Gardeners to spend a week from 11-16th October. Far from disappeared,
Alfonso Tzul
and
Beatrice Waight
, traditional Maya from Belize, were able to meet with gardeners, permaculturalists, healers, and midwives of our area. They both were featured in the annual Fiesta El Pilar co-sponsored with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History where Alfonso and Beatrice discussed their perspectives on sustaining the Maya forest and their experience and relationship to the Maya forest as a garden. Our community at KCSB enjoyed their interviews on Thursday evening’s Latin American Journal and Friday morning’s Sustainable World. Monday, students in Amber VanDerwarker’s Mesoamerican Archaeology had a chance first hand to understand how traditional Maya land use practice has survived since the Spanish conquest 500 years ago, and, in their view, persists today as a strategy to save the Maya forest. Alfonso Tzul and Beatrice Waight return to Belize with new ideas and friends._____It was a busy week! We want to thank all the people who made their visit so enjoyable as well as the panel participants and volunteers who made the Fiesta a wonderful success:
